# Checking for Viruses and Malware on a VPS running Windows Server


| If you suspect your VPS is infected, follow these steps to scan and try to remove malware or viruses:

### Usage/Task Manager

* Viruses and Malware infections can cause high CPU, RAM, or Network usage, without the specific reason. It would be a good idea to **open Task Manager**, check the usage and **check if there are any unknown processes running**. If you see any unknown app or file- make sure to **investigate it and delete**:

## Scan for Malware

1. Search Windows for **Windows Security** app and open it:

2. Choose **Virus & Threat protection** option from the menu on the left side:

3. Make sure to have Virus & threat protection settings **turned on**, then click **Scan options**:

4. Select **Full Scan** and click **Scan Now**:

## Network Traffic Check

1. Search Windows for **Resource Monitor** app and open it:

2. Check if there are any **unknown processes** using the internet:

3. If there are any unknown processes- make sure to suspend them. **Right Click** on the process and choose **Suspend Process**:

* ⚠ **Warning**: Be careful when modifying or disabling network services on your VPS. Closing the wrong service may cause loss of remote access, requiring manual intervention or a full VPS reset.
